Most people think of oil changes as something you do to an engine. But a real lubrication strategy covers every moving part — from the u-joints on a truck to the PTO shaft on a tractor. One of my grandfather's rules was simple: if it moves, it gets grease or oil. He kept a grease gun in every bay and on every piece of equipment. That kind of thinking keeps bearings happy and seals from drying out. On the ranch, I've watched a neighbor lose a $4,000 hay baler because he skimped on the gearbox oil. A lubrication strategy isn't just about the engine. It's about the whole machine.

Your lubrication strategy should vary based on the type of equipment. A daily driver that sees highway miles needs a different schedule than a tractor that sits for three months then works a hundred acres in a week. Here's what works for me.

For cars and light trucks, follow the severe-service schedule in the owner's manual. That means oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, transmission fluid every 30,000, and differential oil every 30,000 to 50,000. I use synthetic gear oil in everything except the oldest engines. It costs more upfront but holds up better under heat. For UTVs and side-by-sides, grease the suspension joints and driveline every 50 hours of operation. The factory often says 100 hours, but I've seen too many ball joints fail at 80. Cut that in half.

For tractors and agricultural equipment, the stakes are higher. A compact tractor's hydraulic system does double duty — lifting, steering, often running the transmission. Change the hydraulic fluid and filter every 200 hours or annually, whichever comes first. Use a multi-grade tractor fluid that meets the manufacturer's spec. I've seen guys put cheap universal fluid in a Kubota and lose a $2,000 hydrostatic pump. Not worth it.

Shop Trick: The Grease Gun Routine

My grandfather taught me this trick — still works 40 years later. Keep a grease gun with a flexible hose in each service bay and on the ranch truck. Every Friday afternoon, I walk the shop and hit every fitting on every bay lift, every floor jack, and every piece of shop equipment. On the ranch, I grease the tractor's front axle pivots, the loader pins, and the bush hog's gearbox after every eight hours of use. One minute of grease prevents an hour of welding.

For UTVs and zero-turn mowers, use a lithium-based grease for high load areas and a moly-based grease for sliding joints like brake caliper slides on trucks. I keep three grease guns labeled: one for general purpose, one for high-temp bearings, one for chassis lube. Takes no extra time and saves a lot of headaches.

Avoiding Common Lubrication Mistakes

Even experienced mechanics screw this up. The biggest mistake I see is over-greasing. You don't need to pump until grease oozes from every seal. On sealed bearings, that forces out the good grease and invites dirt. Two to three pumps is plenty on most fittings. Another mistake is mixing different grease types. Calcium and lithium greases don't play well together. Stick with one brand and type for each application.

Also, don't ignore the schedule just because the equipment is old. I had a customer with a 1995 Chevy 3500 that had never had a transmission fluid change. He insisted it was fine because it still shifted. We convinced him to do a drain and fill, and the fluid came out looking like chocolate milk. That truck made it another 50,000 miles before it needed a rebuild — which we would have done anyway if he'd waited. A proactive lubrication strategy keeps old iron running.

For ranch equipment, check the gearbox breathers. If they're clogged, pressure builds and blows out seals. I clean all breathers during the spring service. And always use the correct viscosity. A 85W-140 gear oil in a cold climate will turn to molasses in January. For Texas winters, it's fine, but a 75W-90 is better for year-round use.

If you're not sure where to start with your own lubrication strategy, take a Saturday and go through every piece of equipment you own. Make a list of fluids and grease points. Write the intervals in a notebook or on a whiteboard in the shop. It took me a weekend to set up, and now I spend maybe 15 minutes a week on lube checks. That's a small investment for keeping a $60,000 tractor or a $40,000 pickup on the road and out of the shop for repairs.
